| dc.description.abstract | This thesis is based on the famous phrase by abolitionist Joaquim Nabuco: "Slavery will remain for a long time as the national characteristic of Brazil." Starting from this point, the study aims to analyze the implications and effects of racism on individuals who have passed through the prison system, with an emphasis on the lives of prison inmates. The aim was to present an in-depth view of how structural racism influences the trajectory of those leaving the prison system. It seeks to understand whether the impacts of racism transcend the socioeconomic field, highlighting the racial specificities and subjective implications on these individuals' self-image. Investigating the impacts of racism on the reintegration of ex-offenders is essential for a comprehensive analysis of life post-prison. Using a diverse bibliographic base, the study aims to unravel the complexities of structural racism, which perpetuates inequalities and racial privileges in a subtle and systemic manner. The work particularly focuses on the prison system, where the incarcerated population is disproportionately composed of black people, a result of discriminatory practices and racial biases in law enforcement. The research reveals how racism significantly affects the rehabilitation and social reintegration of prision inmates, influencing their employment opportunities, education, housing, and mental health. The analysis is grounded in authors like Silvio Almeida and Michelle Alexander, who discuss structural racism and its manifestations in public policies and the criminal justice system. The study is structured into three main blocks: the first historically contextualizes racism in Brazilian society, using classics of Brazilian sociology and contemporary authors; the second presents data and research on racism in the prison system; and the third analyzes field data on the dimensions of structural racism in the lives of prision inmates. The results point to the need for reforms in the penal system and public policies that promote racial equality. The hope is that the findings of this research can contribute to the debate on a fairer and more inclusive society, where everyone can have equal opportunities for reintegration and growth. | |
| dc.description.resumo | Esta dissertação se baseia na célebre frase do abolicionista Joaquim Nabuco:"A escravidão permanecerá por muito tempo como a característica nacional do Brasil". A partir desse ponto de partida, o estudo teve como objetivo analisar as implicações e reflexos do racismo sobre indivíduos que passaram pelo sistema carcerário, com ênfase na vida dos egressos. Buscou-se apresentar uma visão aprofundada sobre como o racismo estrutural influencia a trajetória dos egressos do sistema prisional e compreender se os impactos transcendem o campo socioeconômico, destacando as especificidades raciais e as implicações subjetivas na autoimagem desses indivíduos. A investigação dos impactos do racismo na percepção do egresso e os seus efeitos na reintegração social deles é fundamental para uma análise abrangente da vida póssistema prisional. Utilizando-se de uma base bibliográfica diversificada, o estudo pretendeu desvendar as complexidades do racismo estrutural, que perpetua desigualdades e privilégios raciais de forma sutil e sistêmica. O trabalho se concentra particularmente no sistema prisional, onde a população carcerária é desproporcionalmente composta por pessoas negras, resultado de práticas discriminatórias e do viés racial na aplicação da lei. A pesquisa revela como o racismo afeta significativamente a reabilitação e reintegração social dos egressos, influenciando suas oportunidades de emprego, educação, moradia e saúde mental. A análise é embasada em autores como Silvio Almeida e Michelle Alexander, que discutem o racismo estrutural e suas manifestações nas políticas públicas e no sistema de justiça criminal. O estudo está estruturado em três blocos principais: o primeiro contextualiza historicamente o racismo na sociedade brasileira, utilizando clássicos da sociologia brasileira e autores contemporâneos; o segundo apresenta dados e pesquisas sobre o racismo no sistema prisional; e o terceiro analisa dados coletados em campo sobre as dimensões do racismo estrutural na vida dos egressos.
